Benin is a West African country placed between Ghana and Nigeria. Currently, there are about 12 million people living in our country. However, about 6.5 million people, which is over 60% of Benin’s population, are living in extremely poor conditions lacking electricity. Also, the education rate of Benin is very low, since only 3 out of 10 Benin children could finish school compared to South Korea where almost every student graduates.
One of the reasons for high dropout rates is lack of light.
When the sun went down after school, kids couldn’t do their homework or read books. What's more, households used kerosene lamps to light up houses, which was highly critical for children’s health and environment, which leaves kids exposed to hazardous conditions.
5 years ago, I heard that Santa Clara university is planning to install a solar panel in Alafiarou village in Benin, so I happily joined the project. By installing 2 solar panels in 2 years, I witnessed astonishing changes in the village!
.
Solar panels installed in the village allowed children to study with their friends gathering around in the cottage, live safely in their households by lightbulbs and dream for the future!
By installing 2 solar panels and 104 lightbulbs in Alafiarou village, over 1000 people became available to light!
Since the project stopped due to financial issues, villagers couldn't afford the expensive maintenance fee. Also, other villages in Benin still remained in the dark. Right2Light has made its debut to give access to electricity not only in Alafiarou village but also in other regions!
Right2Light is training youth in the village to manage solar panels on their own without external help. Our final mission is self-reliance and development of the villages in Benin!
It was very impressive that The Bridge International loans us 100% of the funds raised to encourage Benin and Right2Light! By crowdfunding campaigns of TBI, more people and villages in Benin would have access to lights of hope by installing 4 solar panels and 150 light bulbs!
