If you’ve gone shopping for groceries lately, chances are you’ve been surprised by the soaring prices. Both the war and COVID-19 have left lasting effects on crop production. The effects are especially prominent in Nepal, a small developing country.
According to the World Bank, 20% of Nepali farmers lost their jobs and many more suffered reduced farmland. This directly leads to less profit for farmers. This is especially damaging for small farmers in rural Nepal. Lower profits have taken their toll on various levels, ranging from purchasing necessities, financial strain, and opportunities for better income.
In addition, lack of support and recognition for eco-friendly agriculture has led to environmental damage and ultimately less yields. With no other option, these farmers are being forced into unregulated labor in India. Although they cannot receive any protection or help, doing such harsh labor is a necessity for them.
I was always deeply interested in rural Nepal and sustainability. Starting with projects to create jobs for rural youth, I had several opportunities to attend international forums on sustainability and climate changes. It was at this point that I realized the positive impact of sustainable food systems, and actively set out to find ways to benefit farmers and the environment alike.
We turned our attention to nuts. Despite agriculture accounting for a large portion of Nepal’s economy, we were relying heavily on imports for nuts. Produce like makhana nuts from lilies, despite being highly profitable and suitable for Nepali farmers, were being neglected. We thought that we could carve out a business utilizing this crop. And thus, Mitahara was born.
Mitahara partners with farmers in rural Nepal so that they can produce nuts in an eco-friendly way. Farmers who are partners with Mitahara are educated on nut production which also grants higher yields. Mitahara directly purchases these nuts from farmers and makes snacks and meals from them. With this system, farmers can raise more profit due to simplified processes and Mitahara and customers are provided with high-quality nuts.
The vision behind Mitahara Foods extends far beyond mere profits; it is rooted in the aspiration to create a lasting positive impact. Our main goal is to promote healthy living and provide economic opportunities for local farmers. We want to build a thriving system where locally produced foods are at the center, nourishing our communities and protecting the environment!
