It has been a decade since I settled in South Korea, leaving behind my family. I can still vividly recall my 22nd birthday, which I spent alone in an empty room devoid of desks, chairs, and filled with tears. It was an incredibly disheartening and challenging day. Since then, I made a decision to commemorate my birthday as a regular day, in an attempt to forget the painful memories of being alone without my loved ones. Instead, I chose to appreciate the freedom I found in this new land with gratitude each passing day.

However, this year is different. I long for your congratulations on my upcoming birthday, which marks 10 years since my defection from North Korea. This birthday holds great significance for me, as it signifies a decade of my journey. I wouldn't have reached this point today without the love and support from numerous individuals of diverse nationalities and races over the past ten years. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the unwavering supporters who have always stood by my side. Furthermore, I sincerely hope that this warm support will be extended to other North Korean entrepreneurs who are facing their own difficulties while residing in South Korea.

가족을 뒤로하고 한국에 정착한 지 10년이 되었습니다. 책상도 의자도 없이 텅 빈 방에서 혼자 지내며 눈물만 글썽이던 스물두 번째 생일이 아직도 생생히 떠오릅니다. 믿을 수 없을 정도로 낙담하고 힘든 하루였습니다. 그 이후로, 저는 사랑하는 사람들 없이 혼자였던 아픈 기억을 잊기 위해, 제 생일을 평소와 같은 날 처럼 생각하기로 결심했습니다. 제 생일을 특별히 기념하는 대신, 저는 이 새로운 땅에서 제가 찾은 자유를 날마다 감사하는 것을 선택했습니다.

하지만 올해는 다릅니다. 탈북한 지 10년이 되는 올 해의 생일은 저에게 큰 의미가 있습니다. 저의 10년간의 자유를 향한 여행을 의미하기 때문입니다. 지난 10년간 다양한 국적과 인종을 가진 수많은 사람들의 사랑과 지지가 없었다면 오늘 이 자리까지 오지 못했을 것입니다. 항상 곁을 지켜주신 변함없는 지지자 여러분께 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 나아가 남한에 거주하면서 자신의 어려움에 직면해 있는 다른 탈북민 분들에게도 이러한 따뜻한 지원이 확대되기를 진심으로 바랍니다.
